Genus Lingulodinium Wall, 1967b

Cell armoured and polyedral shaped, without antapical spines and apical horn. Descending cingulum without overhang. Theca reticulate to areolate with pores in depressions. Apical pore complex (APC) characteristic of Gonyaulax. Raised inner elliptical rim of Po plate can be closely appressed and can appear as a lattice or protuberances. Plate formula: Po, 3', 3a, 6'', 6c, 7s, 6''', 2''''. Form distinctive cysts.

Toxic and bioluminescent species. Warm temperate to tropical water species.
