Family Dinophysiaceae Stein, 1883

Family within Order Dinophysiales. Cells with a dinokont flagellar orientation and a distinct premedian cingulum. Cingulum and sulcus often with wide lists supported by ribs. A total of 18 or 19 plates in apical, epithecal, cingular, sulcul and hypothecal series. Cell never more than three times as long as broad, frequently laterally flattened.
