A highly specific and sensitive fluoresceing DNA stain used in epifluorescent microscopy to observe structures containing DNA. DAPI specifically binds to double-stranded DNA, and when excited with light the DAPI-DNA complex fluoresces a bright blue (Porter and Feig, 1980).
